Dust Mites, often called spider mites are very small arachnides that are of white in colour and have an average life span of 1-3 months. The human eye alone cannot detect them. To see a dust mite you would need a microscopic lense. Female Dust Mites are larger than their male counterparts, laying 1-3 eggs each day.

Dust Mites love dead human skin cells which are shed on a continual basis. The best repositories of dead skin are bed covers, blankets, pillows, clothing, and more.

Dust Mites do not cause serious illness in humans but can bring on allergic reaction symptoms such as itchy red bumps and sometimes asthma. Their complete elimination is an impossibility but controlling their existence in your kid or teensÂ’ bedding is important.

Controlling Dust Mites in your kids or teen bedroom comforters can be done in the following ways:

• Wash bedding such as bedcovers, blankets, and sheets in hot water once per week if possible.
• Replace wool blankets with cotton or nylon.
• Replace feather and down pillows with ones that have synthetic filling.
• Throw pillows in the dryer for about 15 minutes every couple of weeks.
• Buy a plastic mattress cover for your bed, to prevent dust mites from burrowing in the fibers.

As a parent, it is important to ensure that bedding for kids, babies and teens are washed frequently and replaced every couple of years to prevent health related side effects. Although not serious, health issues associated with Dust Mites can be troublesome for both the parents, children and teenagers.
